A Fun Ending To November

It's a new week and finally I am feeling better after a nasty upper respiratory virus. This is a detail of the only piece of art I managed during that time. Here is the full journal page:

I aptly titled it "Achooo!" This was a quick and fun page to do with random watercolor marks, scribbling with a pencil, splattering and dripping, and then adding the collage papers and threads which were on my table at my fingertips. No actual sneezing or coughing was done on this page:):)
Linking to Paint Party Friday.

Sunday I felt good enough to go to a special exhibit and then  dinner. We went to a local art museum and this is what we went to see:

You can read about it here. Do any of you remember Gene London? Both hubby and I watched his weekend morning show when we were kids. There were at least several write ups about this special exhibit and we knew we weren't going to miss this as we are HUGE OLD MOVIE lovers!!!

The cover and two pages from the brochure.

Upon entering the museum we saw this stunning replica (one like Vivien Leigh wore) from Gone With The Wind. Look at that teeny, tiny waist!!!

These are also replicas from the movie - Rhett Butler's and Vivien Leigh's. Up on the second floor we went to see all the authentic costumes on display. Photos weren't supposed to be taken but as we were among only a few people there since the museum just opened for the day (and I saw a few others taking pics with their phones) I managed to sneak in just three. It began to get crowded quickly  and there were security people in each room watching. There must have been about 50 costumes and I was in heaven!!!

My top two favorite actresses have always been Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn (but my list goes on and on...:) and this is a gown Bette wore in the movie "Elizabeth of Essex". The photos I managed don't even begin to capture the opulence and shine and intricate details!
And here is one Katharine Hepburn wore in "Sea Of Grass":

and the last one I just had to get a pic of:

The waitress outfit Joan Crawford wore in a favorite movie of mine- "Mildred Pierce". And again- that teeny, tiny waist-wow!!! I was completely mesmerized by every costume I saw and was surprised at just how small and tiny these actresses and actors were - they looked so much bigger on the movie screens! There was a Trevor Howard suit that looked like it belonged to a young teen, and the same with a suit worn by James Cagney in "Yankee Doodle Dandy"!  Most of the movies had been done in black and white, so to see these costumes in full glorious color too...wow!! There were small screens on the walls that you could touch on a photo of some of the displayed costumes and they'd show a film clip of the actors wearing them in the movies. There was a framed bit next to each costume that said who wore it, who designed it, and what movie it was from. I had seen almost every single movie that was represented here and was just in awe the whole time!! Hubby and I have already decided we want to make another trip to see this before it leaves on Dec. 22nd:) Oh, and Sundays are always free!

Afterwards we had a nice dinner at a place that we had a GC for and wanted to use. I had been to the Marblehead Chowder House a few times for lunch some years ago.

I thought I had a pic of the reverse side (the actual menu) but I guess not...

We both had a nice Caesar salad, warm rolls, water. I also had a glass of Merlot and hubby had a Guinness. Cheers T Stands for Tuesday peeps!

We also both chose the crab cakes(delicious) and a side of grilled asparagus which was done perfectly. We were too full for dessert but asked to see a menu anyway:

Our waiter brought this to our table and when I opened it up...

voila! candies, and the dessert menu:) Tempting as it was we did not indulge. Nice atmosphere, generous portions, really good food, really good service. We'll be going there again for sure!

I have just begun Christmas cards and for this year my plan is to go CAS (clean and simple) using gorgeous paper packs I recently got from my friend Maureen! It has been SOOOO tempting to order the gnome dies from Simon Says Stamp but I'm being good despite all the gorgeous cards using them showing up everywhere;)

Half of this paper pad has gold glittered papers which are so pretty and sparkly like the one I used for this card:

Products: white card stock; patterned paper (the Paper Studio); washi tape (Nicole- AC Moore). Joining the Simon Says Monday Challenge with the theme of "tape it up".

Lastly, I have one final journal page for Art Journal Journey with the November theme of "fruits and veggies":

Thanksgiving in the US is this Thursday and I will be hosting a small dinner with my hubby, mother, son and his fiancé.  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  1. I really liked your art page achoo-cleverly done, and happy to read you are feeling better.
what an awesome exhibit you went to-I would have really enjoyed that-seeing all those clothes. I am always amazed seeing those very very tiny waist lines in those older movies-the poor girls must have starved themselves or wearing very squeezed in under garments.
Your salad is huge! we are eating lots of salads lately.
    Enjoy your Thanksgiving-day and weekend.
    Happy T hugs Kathy

  2. Wow. What a cool exhibit. I would love that. Thanks so much for sharing with us. And we've had so many various viruses going around school. I hope I don't get the respiratory one because it sounds terrible. Glad to hear you are feeling better. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and happy T day Linda. Hugs-Erika

  4. Oh, hello virus, we got rid of ours, too, finally!
Just a bit coughing left, bad fella that is.
Thank you for making me laugh here, the title is just perfect! "Achooo!" :-) Wonderful!

I must admit, the only old movie I love - and watch it every time at Christmas since I was little - is "It's a Wonderful Life".
"Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings", sooo nice.

Great dresses (I´m more a trousers person, though).

Guinness. Sleep. :-) Happened once, never again! (I made it home before sleep hit).
I like your Christmas cards, and the motto, too.

    I´m wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving. And a happy T-day :-)

  6. Lovely artwork. I especially like the Christmas card. I'm glad you're feeling better. That exhibit looks fantastic. What a thrill to get to see the costumes they wore. I love old movies too. Bette Davis was one of my favorite actresses. And Barbara Stanwyck (spelling?). The food at the restaurant looked delicious. I like the menu photo you got (even though it didn't show the food choices), and how cool is that, that they bring out the dessert menu in a little box full of candies?! Happy T-Day and Happy Thanksgiving!

  7. I love your "Achooo" page Linda. I just love the watercolor background technique you've been using. For the life of me, I can't get even close. Very wet paper? Blow with straw? Maybe you could explain it at tea sometime.

Fabulous exhibit! I'd never heard of Gene London. I grew up in WI. The costumes sure bring back a lot of movie memories. Katherine Hepburn is one of my faves too.

The restaurant sounds great too. So glad you're over your virus. Me too!

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy T-day! Eileen xx

  11. Wow, what a fabulous exhibition! How amazing to look at all those stunning movie costumes, they certainly did things in style in the old movies and it must have been wonderful to look around 😁. You always chose the best restaurants too, those crab cakes look delicious! I'm loving those clean and simple Christmas cards, they look very luxurious - perfect! Glad you are feeling better and wishing you a happy T Day! Hugs, Jo x

  15. Clever art page. I like the disclaimer about no coughing or sneezing 😺 Wow, that costume show. Such gorgeous creations. And yes, those tiny waists! The green velvet ensemble from GWTW always makes me laugh. I blame comedienne, Carol Burnet as she did a skit with that costume though it had a curtain rod through the shoulders. "I just saw it in the winda and had to have it." 😺I love crab cakes and those look scrumptious! I don't think I would have had the will power to skip dessert. Might have ordered something to go. Lovely Christmas cards. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving.

  16. Your art is lovely to see. So lose in design which I happen to think is hard to accomplish. Loved the costumes and the tale of your visit.

  18. I absolutely LOVE your achoo page! What a fun museum especially since you have seen a lot of those movies. The clothing from those old movies are certainly one of a kind in their craftsmanship.I glad you were able to sneak in a few pictures so we could see it along with you.
    Happy Tea Day,

  19. What can I say, other than I realize I'm very late visiting. Your feeling better makes me feel better, too. I love the achoo entry. It is incredible and something I'll be studying because I love the design.

That exhibit sounds fun. I'm not into old movies, but I know many of my T friends are. I've never heard of Gene London, either. The costumes are incredible, though.

I LOVE your card. What a fun way to make your cards this year. And of course, your Thanksgiving card, featuring Rike's theme at Art Journal Journey is wonderful, too.

Now I'm really hungry. I love crab cakes, but even more, I love asparagus. You can have the wine and I'll join your husband with a Guinness stout.

Thanks for sharing your gorgeous art, your AJJ entry, your card, and your meal and drinks with us for T this Tuesday, which is now Wednesday. BTW, I explain what happened on today's blog post.

  20. Your 'Achoo' page is beautiful. But I am so glad you are feeling better. So much better that you really enjoyed the exhibition. I would have loved to see that. Yes, what tiny waists! Such beautiful costumes. A lot of thought and work went into that, and because of the quality of the old black and white films, the costumes did not come into their own at all. I can totally imagine that you are going again before it closes. I wish I lived nearer...
The restaurant is a keeper! The food looks really nice and the desserts too. What a fun idea to hide the menu in a treasure chest.
Your Christmas card are beautiful. Simple of not.
    Happy T-Day (belated),
    Hugs,
    Lisca

  21. Such wonderful outfits in the exhibit!! The name of your journal page made me smile, I, however, think that it is quiet a delicate and pretty piece of artwork. Your other journal page and cards are lovely, certainly captures the spirit of the occasion. So glad to hear that you are feeling better.

We went to an exhibition about Helena Rubenstein in Paris ( coming up) and wished we could have gone again! I almost forgot what fabulous art you have shown here today - especially our "Achoo" page! Belated Happy T Day and Happy Thanksgiving! Chrisx

  25. What a lovely page, Linda - so glad you're felling better!
The show sounds so delightful, Swoon!! Thank you for giving is a glimpse of the lovely costumes.
..."Remember when" our moms and aunties WERE that slim?! When someone who we might think of as a little stout now was considered really heavy? Family photos from the 40s, 50s and 60s show waists, arms and necks that are, while not wasp thin, much slimmer than the "norm" these days! (I have my theories on that) ....

Fun tidbit: after his European tour in WWII, my handsome dad, in his 30s, was stationed in California, and involved in training new soldiers. One day, Clark Cable walked into the commissary, looking for fellows who wouldn't mind being in camera for his "project" a film he was making about the European war effort!
Never shy, and having been in plays in HS in the 20s, AB raised his hand! So he was in the barracks and classroom scenes of Gable's "Combat America." .... If you watch it on YouTube, you can see my dad on his cot partway through, as the fellow on might duty listens for planes overhead ... He opens his baby blue eyes (yes, it's black and white, but I know!!) To "track" the plane going over! Gable took them out to eat later. My dad kept his "girlish figure" (his words) for decades!
My cousin Merlyn got to see Combat America when it was shown in Portland. The action footage was filmed in England and in the air - and the waists of the genuine nurses and servicewomen were also pretty slim!
    PPF!!
